Window Tint Shades, Explained (5 Percent to Legal)

What the percentage means

The number on a tint is how much light it lets through. A 5 percent film, what people call limo, lets almost nothing through. A 35 percent is much lighter. Lower number, darker glass.

Front versus back

New Jersey is strict on front windows and gives you more room on the back and rear glass. We tell you what is legal on the front before we cut anything, so a stop does not cost you the film.

Why the cut matters

A clean tint job is about the cut and the lay: no bubbles, no light gaps at the edge. We cut to each window and squeegee it flat, then let it cure. Do it right once and it holds for years.
